The Most Popular FAQs:

1. I haven't received my Number Pick-up card in the mail. What should I do?

Simply bring a photo id with you to Number Pick-up on race weekend. Go to the Replacement Number Pick Up Card booth in room 207, present your photo id, and a volunteer will print a new card for you.

2. What do I do if I cannot participate once I have registered?

Unfortunately numbers are non-transferable and entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. You may not give your number to someone else.

If you qualified after September 27, 2008, you do not need to request a deferment of your qualifying time. You may simply re-use this same qualifying time to register for the 2010 Boston Marathon. Registration for that race will begin in September, 2009 via our web site.

If your qualifying race was between September 29, 2007 and September 26, 2008, and you are no longer able to participate in the 2009 Boston Marathon, you may defer your time to 2010, provided that you:

  • notify us in writing no later than April 20, 2009 by
returning your number pick-up card with an explanation to:
B.A.A.
One Ash Street
Hopkinton, MA
01748-1897

OR:

  • return your number pick-up card in person during number pick-up hours on race weekend. First pick up your bib number, chip, runner's shirt and bag, then return your bib number and timing chip to the Solution Center in the number pick-up area at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo.
A specially marked application for 2010 will then be mailed to you in October 2009 (a 2010 entry fee will be required).

3. When and where is number and T-shirt pick-up?

Number and T-shirt pick-up will be held on Friday, April 17, 2009, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19 between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo, to be held at the Hynes Memorial Convention Center in Boston.

4. Can a friend pick up my number for me?

Yes. You must sign your number pick-up card and give it to your friend. Your friend must write his/her name and address on the card and provide his/her photo I.D. when he/she picks up your number. He/she will be directed to an I.D. verification booth when entering the expo. No photo copies or notes will be accepted. Numbers are non-transferable and entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

5. Can I move from one corral to another corral within my assigned wave?

You may move BACK to a higher corral, but you can not more forward to a lower corral. This kind of movement should be kept to a minimum given the amount of space allocated to each corral.

However, we encourage all runners to line up in the corral to which they have assigned.

6. Can I move from one wave to the other wave?

You may move from Wave 1 to Wave 2, however you may not move from Wave 2 to Wave 1. Due to space constraints, runners from Wave 1 may not move into the first corral of Wave 2.

7. What is the best way to get to the start in Hopkinton?

The ONLY guaranteed way to get to the start on race morning is by the official B.A.A. buses between 6:00 and 7:30 a.m. Bus loading will take place at the Tremont Street side of the Boston Common in Boston’s Back Bay area. In order to load all the buses efficiently, avoid delays and get to the start on time, we strongly recommend the following bus loading schedule:

6:00 a.m.–6:45 a.m.Bib #’s 1,000–13,999
6:45 a.m.–7:30 a.m.Bib #’s 14,000+

NOTE: Transportation to the start is for official runners only. Each runner must show his/her bib number upon boarding. We are not able to provide transportation to the start from Boston for family or friends.

Limited transportation from Boston to Hopkinton to both parking areas will be available after the race at no charge. Buses leave from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. from the corner of Stuart and Berkeley Streets. You must show your race number upon boarding.

Wheelchair participants will receive transportation information with their Number Pick-up Card.

8. How do I get to the start from the parking lots in Hopkinton? Can my family come with me?

Shuttle buses will run from the Hopkinton State Park and the Hopkinton Industrial Park parking lots to the center of Hopkinton. Family and friends are allowed on the buses, and shuttle service back to the lots will be provided immediately after the start of wave two.

9. When will registration begin for the 2010 Boston Marathon?

Applications for the 2010 Boston Marathon will begin to be accepted in September 2009.

I used my qualifying time from a fall marathon in 2008 to enter the 2009 Boston Marathon. Can I use the same time again for the 2010 Boston or do I need another qualifier?

Qualifying for the 2010 Boston Marathon began September 27, 2008, so if you ran a fall marathon on that date or later your time can be used to qualify for the Boston Marathon in both 2009 and 2010, even if you run in 2009.

I will be 44 when I run my qualifying race, but will be 45 when I run Boston. What is my qualifying time?

Your qualifying time is based on your age on the day of the Boston Marathon, thus your qualifying time will be 3hrs 30 min – and you can be 44 when you run your qualifying race.

What is the date of the 2009 B.A.A. Half Marathon?

The 2009 B.A.A. Half Marathon will be held on October 11.

What is the date of the 2010 Boston Marathon?

The 2010 Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, April 19.

What is the first day I can qualify for the 2010 Boston Marathon?

The qualifying window for the 2010 Boston Marathon is scheduled for September 27, 2008 to approximately February, 2010, or when we reach our entrant maximum. Registration for the 2009 Boston Marathon closed in late January.

When does registration begin for the 2009 B.A.A. Half Marathon?

Registration for the 2009 B.A.A. Half Marathon will begin in July via our website.
