Relay Beginning

The B.A.A. is committed to introducing and encouraging the sport of running in the lives of Boston-area youths.

Focusing on the fundamentals of running, team participation, and health benefits, the" B.A.A. Training Basics" curriculum offers a unique athletic opportunity for area youths.

The umbrella program, "B.A.A. Training Basics," includes recreational running in the spring (Club 114 and B.A.A. Relay Challenge) and cross-country in the fall (with Boston Public Schools and the Boston Center for Youths and Families). As a community service, the B.A.A. offers all of its programs free of charge.

Since the initiative was launched in 1997, more than 15,000 youths have benefited from the B.A.A.'s programming and introduction to our sport.

CLUB 114 RELAY CHALLENGE
Start Time - 10:30 AM

The Boston Athletic Association is once again sponsoring its youth running program on the occasion of the Boston Marathon. Again this year Club 114 will culminate with the Relay Challenge on Saturday, April 17, 2010, two days before the historic 114th running of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon. Last year’s youth event was again a tremendous success with more than 800 youth participants from more than 20 clubs attending the Relay Challenge. Much of this success can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of the coaches and facility coordinators. Since 1997 over 15,000 youths have taken part in this program.

Beginning in late-March, training will take place at selected middle schools and community-based organizations. Clubs will be concentrated on the eight cities and towns along the Boston Marathon route, and we also have offered the program to facilities and administrators that have shown a strong interest in hosting Club 114.

The program outline is as follows:
• Four week training period from March 19 to April 16
• Participants should be in 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
• The program will culminate with the B.A.A. Relay Challenge on Saturday, April 16, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
