| Miller & Holbrook Crowned USATF New England Grand Prix 5-Mile Champions at the Ollie |
 |
| 9/9/2007 |
It felt more like July then September at the Ollie 5-Miler in South Boston on Saturday, September 8th, but the unseasonably warm temperatures didn't stop Mark Miller from easily claiming his second Ollie title and his second USATF New England 5-Mile Championship. Miller, who won the Ollie and the New England 5-Mile Championship here in 2005, was all alone as he came around the final turn and into the finish, crossing the line 40 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Miller's strong performance kept the tradition going as he led the men's team to their eighth consecutive USATF New England Grand Prix 5-mile title - a streak that dates back to the 2000 championship. The B.A.A. men placed three in the top ten to put them on solid ground. Ben Schmeckpeper and Josh Ferenc placed sixth and seventh respectively. Also turning in solid performances were veteran B.A.A. runners Chris Volante and Chris Magill who rounded out the scoring for the B.A.A. Interestingly, it was the same 5 runners that combined to win the 2006 USATF New England Grand Prix Championship at the Ollie. Mariko Holbrook also ran unchallenged for the women's title, winning by 22 seconds. The B.A.A. now boasts six individual champions in the 2007 USATF New England Grand Prix: Pat Moulton and Kasie Enman both captured titles at the New Bedford Half Marathon in March while Josh Ferenc and Heidi Westerling won the 10k and 5k titles respectively at the Groton 10k Road Race and the Westford 5k back in May. The men's and women's teams also have two titles apiece, adding the 5-mile title to the half-marathon title that they claimed at New Bedford. There are two races remaining in the seven-race series: the Apple Harvest 10-miler on September 23rd and the Cape Cod Marathon on Sunday, October 28th. RESULTS 1. Mark Miller 24:42 6.
