Fresh off of her win at the USATF New England 5-mile Championship last Saturday, Mariko Holbrook added another title to her running resume as she led the B.A.A. women's team to a USATF National 5k Road Championship at the Downtown 5k in Providence, RI on Sunday, September 16, 2007. Holbrook finished in 17:10, just ahead of teammates Brett Ely and Mary Proulx who ran 17:21 and 17:29 respectively. All three women finished ahead of the second place finisher on the runner-up team, Adidas-Raleigh.
Leading the men was Mark Miller, finishing in 28th place with a time of 14:48. Ken Leinbach placed 1st in the 50 to 59 age-group with a time of 16:55.
The CVS Caremark Downtown 5K was the sixth stop on the 2007 USA Running Circuit (USARC). The USARC is a USA Track & Field road series that features USA Championships from 5 km to the marathon and attracts the best U.S. distance runners. The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners.
Meanwhile, half a world away, Jarrod Shoemaker, a B.A.A. standout and the 2005 Mayor's Cup Cross Country Champion, held off two former Olympians to finish eleventh overall and first American in the ITU BG Beijing World Cup to earn the first spot on the USA Olympic Triathlon Team. It came down to the final 10k run and Shoemaker gradually moved ahead over the third lap of the four-lap course to secure his place on the 2008 U.S.A. Olympic team.
