Hot and Hilly: The Apple Harvest Ramble 10 Miler Proves To Be A Challenge; Men's Masters Team Wins at Lake Winnipesaukee
9/23/2007

Hot and hilly was the best way to describe the 2007 Apple Harvest Ramble 10-Miler in Harvard, MA on Sunday, September 23, 2007. A warm autumn day combined with a noon start time made for less than ideal conditions for the 500+ competitors who took part in the USATF New England 10-Mile Championship. In addition, a course change meant that the runners had to face a half-mile climb to the finish line.

In spite of the challenges, the B.A.A. men's and women's teams posted some solid performances with both teams taking second place. Ben Schmeckpeper was the first B.A.A. athlete across the line in third place. Terry Shea, who was using the race as preparation for the U.S.A. Men's Olympic Marathon Trials in November, warmed-up for the race with loop around the entire 10-mile course, and went on to finish sixth in 53:09. Chris Magill also cracked the top ten, finishing 9th in 54:06. Matt Carter (55:05) and Ian Nurse (56:45), who joined Shea on his 10-mile "warm-up", rounded out the men's scoring.

Heidi Westerling, the 2007 USATF New England Grand Prix 5k Champion, took runner-up honors in the 10-miler. Westerling will be looking to capture her third consecutive Cape Cod Marathon title on October 28th. The Cape Cod Marathon is also the last event in the 2007 USATF New England Grand Prix Series. Also scoring for the B.A.A. women were Carly Graytock and Lindsay Willard. Willard also placed second in the 19-29 year age category.

Other noteable results were posted by Joe Kaiser, who placed second in the 50-59 age group, Chris Magill, who won the 30-39 year age division, and Stephanie Westcott who finished third in the 19-29 age group.

In other racing action over the weekend, on Saturday, September 22nd, the Men's Masters team won the 2007 Fred Brown Relay Around Lake Winnipesaukee (NH) outright, finishing more than 24 minutes ahead of second place. The team completed the 65.1 mile event in a time of 6:44:20 (6:13 pace). Team members included: Bernie O'Reilly, Kyle Bowers, Andy MacDonald, Andrew Gordon, Bob Collins, Chris Smith, Bob Gerrity, and Pat Stumbras. For complete results, Visit the Event Website.
