"If you don't like the weather in New England, wait an hour." That old saying held true at the B.A.A. Half Marathon on Sunday, October 7, 2007. As runners started the race at Clemente Park, temperatures were in the high 60s with some humidity. By the time runners returned to the finish, the weather had changed to cool and misty with temperatures reading in the high 50s. It turned out to be ideal racing conditions and B.A.A. runners took full advantage, sweeping all of the men's team titles and capturing the women's open title as well. Neither the men's nor the women's open team has ever lost a race in the seven year history of the B.A.A. Half Marathon. A number of team members earned individual accolades as well. David Bridgewater was the first B.A.A. finisher in 14th place followed closely by Chris Magill in 15th place. Ian Nurse (17th) and Jared Markowitz (18th) also finished in the top 20 overall. They, along with Mark Churchill, comprised the winning men's open team. Club newcomer and former UMass Lowell harrier, Nicole Plante, led the B.A.A. women with her 7th place finish in the women's field. Plante, who is coming off of a summer injury, was a Division II All-American in cross country and track and field in college and was the runner-up at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships last fall. Lindsay Willard, Melissa Sherman, Erin Heslin, Laura Smith, and Mae Shoemaker, along with Plante, combined to win the women's open title. The age group awards were also dominated by B.A.A. athletes: Pat Stumbras won the 50-59 year-old division while John Fortescue was runner-up in the 40-49 year-old category. Wayne Levy, the inaugural B.A.A. Half-Marathon winner, was fourth in the 40-49 year-old category, followed by Brian Cann in seventh and Craig Macfarlane in ninth. In the 30-39 year-old division, Magill, Churchill, and Josh Gordon were fifth, eighth and ninth respectively. In the 50-59 year-old category, Mae Shoemaker was the runner-up for the women and John Stuart was seventh for the men. In the 20-29 year-old women's division, Plante was fifth followed by Willard in eighth, Sherman in ninth, and Heslin in tenth. And the oldest entrant, Anthony Cellucci, won the 70 to 79 age group award. RESULTS 14. David Bridgewater 1:10:02 15. Chris Magill 1:10:48 17. Ian Nurse 1:11:31 18. Jared Markowitz 1:12:41 23. On a day when temperatures soared into the high 80s with high humidity, race directors closed the course at the halfway point for safety. Despite the adverse conditions, several B.A.A. runners turned in solid performances: Eric Blake was the top B.A.A. finisher and the third American overall. Blake, who coaches at Central Connecticut State University, was the 2006 winner of the Mount Washington Road Race.
