Terry Shea Captures the Men's Title at the Old Fashioned 10-Miler
2/17/2008

While most people were out testing their fitness in preparation for a spring marathon, Terry Shea was giving competitors and spectators a glimpse of the training and talent that helped him to a 2:23:44 at the U.S. Olympic Trials Men's Marathon back on November 3, 2007. Shea, who finished third here in 2007 and 2002 and fifth in 2001 ran comfortably throughout before taking a convincing lead in the final miles, to win the Old Fashioned 10-Miler in Foxboro, MA on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Shea won by 27 seconds, improved his time by 4 seconds over last year, and became the third B.A.A. male winner at the Old Fashioned:Chris Magill won here in 2006 and Keven O'Neil was the 2003 champion. Shea most recently turned his attention from the marathon to some shorter race distances, at the BU Valentines indoor track meet he set a PR at 5000 meters (14:57.92).

In the women's race, 2005 Champion, Brett Ely, who is coming back from both injury and a mild illness last week, managed a comfortable and controlled effort to finish second. Ely is preparing for the U.S. Olympic Trials Women's Marathon in Boston on Sunday, April 20th.

Over the past eight years, seven B.A.A. women have won at the Old Fashioned, including former course record-holder Beth Whitney ('01) whose 58:42 stood as the record for seven years until being broken this year. Other B.A.A. champions have included Diana Bowser ('03), Cathi Campbell ('04), Brett (Romano) Ely ('05), Carrie Zografos ('06) and Kasie Enman ('07)

For other B.A.A. runners, the Old Fashioned 10-Miler has become a regular stop in the Boston Marathon training schedule, with several testing their fitness in preparation for Boston. Overall, if the results are any indication, the B.A.A. can expect good results at Boston come April 21st as a number of club members placed in their age groups.

Club members will be taking the next few weeks to prepare for the New Bedford Half Marathon on March 16th, the final test before toeing the line in Boston on Patriots Day.
