| The 112th Boston Marathon: A Perfect Day for Personal Bests UPDATED |
 |
| 4/21/2008 |
What a difference a year makes! After enduring high winds, rain, and gloomy forecasts in 2007, the weather dawned perfect on Monday, April 21, 2008 for the 112th running of the Boston Marathon. B.A.A. runners took full advantage of the conditions, capturing the Men's Open Team title and posting numerous personal bests. In the team competition, the B.A.A. men captured the Open Team title. Eric Blake the 2006 Mount Washington Champion, led the men's charge with an impressive 2:24:30, crossing the line in 23rd place. Also contributing to the team victory were Mark LaRosa, who cracked the top 100 with his 87th place finish, and Michael Emanuel who was running his second-ever marathon after having qualified for Boston with a 2:44:32 at Hyannis in February. He lowered that P.R. by almost 9 minutes, running 2:35:41 for 104th place. In the women's master's competition, Karen Mahoney-Ringheiser, combined with club newcomer Alison Keefe and Boston Marathon veteran Cathy Lifschultz to place third. The open women, who were second last year, had six individuals run in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Women's Marathon, hosted by the B.A.A., the day prior - including the three that comprised the runner-up team in 2007. Still, the team of Erin Heslin, Maria Urso, and Lara Johnson, finished in 6th place overall. Urso had a particularly impressive day, running a negative split by over a minute to finish in 3:07:21. The Master's Men faced stiff competition this year and, despite lowering their 2007 fourth-place team time by some 15 minutes, the team of Jonathan Fortescue, John Schoenberg, and Michael Vitelli placed 8th overall. Vitelli recorded a 5-minute P.R. improving his marathon best to 2:51:01. Also shaving 5 minutes off of his P.R. was 51-year old Patrick Stumbras, who will be representing the B.A.A. at the National Master's Marathon Championship hosted by the Medtronics Twin Cities Marathon in October. The club results as whole were impressive: of the 13,028 male and 8,935 female finishers in the 2008 Boston Marathon, more than 1/3 of the B.A.A. men finished in the top 10% of the field and 47 of 59 finishing in the top half. The B.A.A. women were also competitive with 11 of the 21 competitors finishing in the top 10% of the field and 19 of 21 finishing in the top half. RESULTS: 23. Eric Blake 2:24:30 87.
