A Triple Crown for the Men's Open Team, Women Capture Their Second Team Title in the 2008 USATF New England Grand Prix
6/1/2008

Three races, three victories. The B.A.A. Men's Open team collected their third victory in as many races at the 2008 USATF New England Grand Prix at the Rhody 5k in Lincoln Rhode Island on Sunday, June 1st. Finishing on the dog track at the Twin Rivers Casino, it was a racing trifecta for the men's team, having also won Grand Prix titles at the New Bedford Half Marathon in March and the Medical Center 6k in May. In addition to the Grand Prix victories, they are the 2008 Boston Marathon team champions.

It was a strong team effort with the top 5 men finishing within 21 seconds of one another. Their combined time was 2+ minutes ahead of second place. The trio of Terry Shea, Wilson Perez, and Matt Carter took third through fifth places to lead the charge. They were followed by Matt Ely who was 9 seconds back in 9th place and Eric Blake who rounded out the team scoring with his 13th place finish. Ben Schmeckpeper, the 2006 USATFNE 5k Champion, was the B.A.A.'s sixth man in 16th place. The men have won eight of the last nine USATF-NE Grand Prix 5k titles.

While the women did not have any individuals win, place, or show, their team effort propelled them to victory by over a minute. Amy Gosztyla was the first B.A.A. woman across the line in 6th place. Also placing in the top ten were Carly Graytock in 7th place and Brett Ely in 10th place. Katie Hatch and Mary Proulx were close behind in 11th and 12th place respectively to complete the team scoring. The women have won seven of the last nine USATF-New England 5k Championships.

Other impressive performances were turned in by Mimi Fallon who marked her return to racing with a victory in the women's master's category and the amazing Bill Riley who, at age 72, was first in the 70+ category and was 7th overall among age 60+ runners!

The next race in the USATF New England Grand Prix schedule is the Yankee Homecoming 10 Miler in Newburyport, MA on Tuesday, July 29th.
