| Champions Again: The Men's and Women's Teams Claim the 5-Mile USATF New England Grand Prix Titles |

| 9/6/2008 |
Nine years later and the results still read the same way: Men's Open Team: First Place, Boston Athletic Association. On Saturday, September 6, 2008, the men's open team successfully defended their USATF New England 5 Mile title at the Ollie Road Race in South Boston, making it nine in a row in a winning streak that dates back to 2000. The women reclaimed the title that they last held in 2006, capturing their seventh title in eight years. Both the men's and women's teams boasted the USATF New England Individual Champions as well. For the men, Patrick Moulton who has recently rejoined the B.A.A. after a stint with the Brooks-Hansons Racing Team, led the way with his third-place finish overall. Matt Ely was right on his heals as they came into the finish, placing fourth overall and second in the USATF New England Grand Prix Competition. Ely currently sits atop the Leader Board in the individual standings heading into the last event of the 2008 series: the Bay State Marathon. The men's team is also in the lead for the overall 2008 Grand Prix title. A solid performance at the Bay State Marathon should help them clinch that title. Rounding out the scoring for the men, Matt Carter, Terry Shea, and Chris Volante, all put in solid performances to hold off the second place team by a mere 39 seconds. Bill Riley also had a terrific race, placing 5th in the 60 and over category and first among the 70-year olds. The women packed all five scorers into the top 11, led by Julie Spolidoro, who claimed her first USATF New England Grand Prix title. Her win came on the heels of another victory the previous evening at the Marathon Sports End of Summer Classic 4.2 miler. Spolidoro is returning to top form and is looking ahead to the fall racing calendar. Not too far behind her in fouth, fifth and sixth place were Brett Ely, Heidi Westerling, and Lara Johnson. For Johnson, her 29:17 was yet another P.R., besting her previous time by almost a minute. Westerling had a strong showing coming off a solid performance at the New Haven Road Race (20k) on Monday. Mimi Fallon rounded out the women's team scoring while taking home the top Master's prize. The 2008 USATF New England Grand Prix will conclude with the Bay State Marathon in Lowell on Sunday, October 19th.
