| Make It Eight! The B.A.A. Teams Remain Unbeaten at the B.A.A. Half Marathon |
 |
| 10/12/2008 |
On a perfect fall day, the B.A.A. teams were just that - perfect. In the eight year history of the B.A.A. Half Marathon, the Men's, Women's, and Men's Master's Teams have never been beaten. The streak continued on Sunday, October 12, 2008 as the three teams each captured their eighth consecutive team titles. The men's team put together a number of strong individual performances, winning the team competition by some 45 minutes. All seven men on the scoring team finished in the top 30 overall: Josh Gordon was the first team member across the line in 13th place, followed by new club member Andreas Heilmann in 15th. Mike Dowling also cracked the top 20 with his 19th place finish. Completing the team scoring were Deon Barrett in 21st place, Michael McGrane in 24th place, Ben Schersten in 27th place, and Michael Vitelli in 29th place. Vitelli was also the top finisher for the B.A.A. in the Master's competition and placed second overall in that category. The women were equally as strong, with Lara Johnson, Maria Varela, and Brett Ely finishing within 2 minutes of one another to put the B.A.A. Women's team on solid ground. Johana Fickenscher, Renee Knapp, Lindsay Willard, and Christine O'Donnell, rounded out the women's team scoring. Their combined time was almost a half hour better than second place. In the Men's Master's Competition, former B.A.A. Half Marathon Champion, Wayne Levy, along with Peter Decambre, Paul Davies, Brian Foley, Christopher Ashe and Steve Liakos combined with Vitelli to keep the Masters' bragging rights for another year. And while he didn't win his age group, Anthony Cellucci was the oldest finisher at age 76. Race day conditions were cool, dry, and sunny and the foliage was at its peak as the runners took to the roads. In all, 3,702 runners completed the race - the largest field in the race's eight-year history. The eighth running was also the most competitive as some of the top road racers in the world journeyed to Boston to take part in a race that has also established itself as a local favorite. Club members had the opportunity to celebrate their undefeated status at a post-race celebration at Solas on Sunday night.
