12/9/2008
The Boston Athletic Association is pleased to announce that Terry Shea has joined the coaching staff as an Assistant Coach of the Running Club. Shea will be working with Head Coach Michael Pieroni and Assistant Coach Suzanne Walmsley to help oversee the development of the club’s training groups. While he may be the newest member of the coaching staff, Shea is not a newcomer to the B.A.A. After a successful running career at Bucknell University where he was a team captain and a Patriot League Scholar Athlete, Shea came to Boston in 2000 to pursue career opportunities. He subsequently joined the B.A.A. where he has compiled a long list of running accomplishments, highlighted by having twice qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Men’s Marathon in 2004 and 2007. Shea boasts a 2:20:52 personal best which he posted at the 2006 Austin Marathon. He has twice been the top Massachusetts finisher in the Boston Marathon and placed second in the inaugural B.A.A. Half Marathon. He also holds several USATF New England Grand Prix Titles in distances ranging from the 5k to the half-marathon. Besides individual accolades, Terry has been a mainstay on winning B.A.A. teams from New England Championships, the Boston Marathon and Mt. Washington Road Race. In 2004, Shea moved to Michigan to participate in the Hanson’s Distance Project, before returning to Boston and the B.A.A. in 2005. "I am very excited for this opportunity to serve a new role within the BAA, to now work alongside a terrific coaching staff in Michael and Suzanne, and ultimately add value to the organization by drawing upon cumulative years of athletic and advisory experience", said Shea. Shea brings a wealth of experience to the position, having extensive knowledge of the local and national competitive running scene. Shea has coached at the high school level and has been generous in offering guidance to several local distance runners. A true student of the sport, Shea has a strong knowledge of various training programs and is able to translate that knowledge to his athletes for their benefit. Head Coach Michael Pieroni says of Shea: “Terry has a proven track record of athletic success. Years of hard work, a competitive spirit, and a strong sense of team have been his hallmark. His willingness to share these experiences makes him a terrific asset for all of our members.” Shea holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and is currently employed as a Bioinformtic Assembly Analyst at The Broad Institute in Cambridge, MA, a genome research collaboration of MIT, Harvard, and affiliated hospitals. He is engaged to fellow unicorn Carly Graytock.
