The B.A.A. Opens the 2009 USATF New England Grand Prix with Dual wins
2/22/2009

The B.A.A. men and women began the 2009 USATF New England Grand Prix in winning form, taking both 10-mile titles at the Jones Realty Group 10-Miler in Amherst, MA on Sunday, February 22, 2009. Individually, Heidi Westerling captured the Women’s Championship running an impressive 58:18 over the hilly course. She was followed closely by Kasie Enman who placed second in 58:34. Jeannette Seckinger, a new addition to the B.A.A. roster, was fourth, helping the women clinch the title. The trio combined for a total time of 2:57:15.

In the men’s race, the teams performance was boosted by strong showings from veteran Unicorns and new members as well. Pat Moulton led the B.A.A. charge with his runner-up performance, just a few seconds ahead of Mark Miller who, with his strong finishing kick closed the gap between he and Moulton and plaaced him just ahead of fourth-place finisher and new club member Brendan Callahan. Michael Chettle, was the clubs fourth runner across the line in 52:09 place and Boston College Men's Head Coach Matt Kerr completed the scoring with his 52:17. Their combined time of 4:19:04 put them more than 10 minutes minutes ahead of second place.

The B.A.A, last competed at this event back in 1999 with the same result: both the men and women's teams taking home the title. Results from that year are listed below.

The club’s winning performance was a good indication of the teams’ overall fitness as many of the people racing are in the midst of training for the 113th Boston Marathon. With only 8 weeks to go until Boston, the 10-miler gave individuals a chance to assess their fitness as they fine-tune their training over the coming weeks.

The next event on the club's racing calendar is the New Bedford Half Marathon on Sunday, March 15, 2009 in New Bedford, MA. The race is the second event in the USATF New England Grand Prix and the B.A.A. men will be looking for their fifth consecutive victory while the women will be aiming for four in a row.
