B.A.A. Scores a Double Victory at the Rhody 5k
6/7/2009

Luke Meyer won his first USATF New England Grand Prix title and led the men's open team to victory with his win at the Rhody 5k in Lincoln, RI on Sunday, June 7, 2009.

Meyer, a steeplechase specialist, was with a pack of four or five at the halfway mark. He broke away during the second half of the race, winning decisively in 14:33, 13 seconds ahead of second place and twenty seconds ahead of course record holder and Irish Olympian, Mark Carroll. Meyer's winning time was a mere 6 seconds off of the course record.

The B.A.A. men quickly packed-in the next four finishers with Matt Ely, Matt Kerr, Ben Schmeckpeper and Brendan Callahan, all finishing in the top ten to round out the scoring.

In the women's competition, Mariko Holbrook led for a significant portion of the race, ultimately finishing in the runner-up position. Holbrook, who won the Penn Relays Olympic Development 10k last month, ran 17:25 and led the B.A.A. women to the USATF New England Grand Prix 5k Championship. Her efforts earned her the USATF New England Grand Prix title. Also placing in the top five, Kristin Murphy and Lesley Hocking ran together from the gun, finishing in the same time of 17:56. Lara Johnson and Christine O'Donnell completed the scoring for the B.A.A. women.

The dual wins by Meyer and Holbrook boosted the number of B.A.A. individual champions in the 2009 USATF New England Grand Prix to four: Heidi Westerling claimed top honors in both the Jones Realty Group 10 Miler in Amherst, MA on February 22 and the New Bedford Half Marathon on March 15 in New Bedford, MA. Both the men's and women's teams have a strong winning tradition at the USATF New England Grand Prix 5k race, having won the event eight of the last ten years.

There are three races remaining in the 2009 series: The Ollie 5 Mile on September 12, the Lone Gull 10k on September 20, and the Bay State Marathon on October 18th.
