Sweet Victory for Seckinger at the Sugar Bowl 5 Miler
7/19/2009

Once again, the B.A.A. was well-represented at the Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5 Miler on Thursday, July 16, 2009 in South Boston, MA. Club colors were prominent at the starting line and amongst the top finishers. Jeanette Seckinger claimed her third title in 2009 and her first Sugar Bowl title, taking top honors in a time of 29:08. The 2009 National Marathon Champion and 2009 USATF New England Outdoor Track 5k Champion, Seckinger displayed both strength and speed as she ran patiently, taking the lead at the halfway point and opening a 25m gap on the runner-up. At the finish line, Seckinger turned on the speed to secure the win by 8 seconds.

The B.A.A. men had 5 finishers in the top 10: Will Dobbie was first for the B.A.A. men with his third-place finish. Rounding out the top ten were Bernie Jones (formerly Muller), Lou Rafetto, and John Colavincenzo who took 3rd, 5th, 9th and 10th respectively.

The women also populated the top of the results column with seven in the top ten: Seckinger was first, followed by Amy Gosztyla in fourth, Christine O’Donnell in sixth, Beth Coughlin in seventh, Amanda Walsh in eighth, Renee Knapp in ninth, and Pamela Kustas in tenth place.

In addition, the club boasted several age group award winners: Bill Riley was first in the 70-74 age group with an impressive time of 34:17. His time would have won or placed in every age division from 50 years old and up. Also winning their age divisions were Brian Foley in the 40-44 age group, Will Dobbie in the 25-29 age group, Amy Gosztyla in the 30-34 year age group, Pamela Kustas in the 40-44 age division, and Carol Chaoui in the 45-49 age group. And placing for the women were: Christine O’Donnell and Amanda Walsh who were second and third respectively in the 25–29 year age group and Beth Coughlin, who was second in the 30-34 age division.

In the men’s age groups, Bernie Jones was third in the 25-29 age group; Ben Schersten was second and Josh Gordon was third in the 30-34 age group; Michael Vitelli was third in the 45-49 division and Jim Thompson (55-59) and Dennis Herman (60-64) each took runner-up honors in their respective divisions.

The next race in the B.A.A. Summer Series is the Marathon Sports 5-Miler on Thursday, July 23, 2009 @ 7:00 PM in Weston, MA.
