B.A.A. Athletes Weather the Storm and Take Home Dual Titles
9/14/2009

The rain was pouring down and accolades were pouring in as the B.A.A. Men's and Women's Open teams defended their respective USATF New England Grand Prix 5 Mile titles at the Ollie 5 Mile in South Boston, MA on Saturday, September 12, 2009.

Due to a turnaround error, the course measured 4.91 miles instead of the full 5, but the times and finishes were still impressive. Heather Cappello ran a speedy 27:09 to take first place in the women's race and her first USATF New England Grand Prix 5 Mile title. She led the B.A.A.Open Women to their second consecutive USATF New England 5 Mile Championship. Over the past twelve years, the women have won this event 9 times.

Other strong performances helped put the women on the top of the podium: B.A.A. newcomers Emily Kroshus, a 2004 Princeton grad and NCAA Division I 10k All-American, and Esther Erb, the 2008 NCAA Division III 10k Champion from Case Western Reserve, placed second and fifth respectively. Combined with solid performances from veterans Brett Ely (4th) and Amy Gosztyla (8th), the women had a 5 1/2 minute margin of victory. Also placing in the top 15 were Kristin Murphy (12th), and Renee Knapp (14th). Mimi Fallon placed 15th overall and took home the top Master's prize.

The men team successfully defended their USATF New England 5 mile title winning the event for the ninth-consecutive year. The men were led by Mark Miller's fifth place finish. Miller, a two-time champion at this event (2005, 2007), ran 24:02, a mere 9 seconds back from first. Finishing second for the B.A.A. and 7th overall was club newcomer Brian Harvey, a 2009 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University where he was a three-time NCAA Division III All-American and a recipient of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. Rounding out the scoring for the men's team were Matt Ely in 12th, Will Dobbie in 13th, and Mike Fisher in 16th place. Jonathan Fortescue kept his name at the top of the USATF New England Grand Prix Master's standings with his 3rd place finish in that category.

Other B.A.A. athletes placing in their age group were: Knapp and Dorothy Zirkle, 2nd and 6th in the 20-29 age group; The men's 20-29 age group saw Dobbie(1st), Fisher (3rd), Patrick Moulton (4th), Louis Raffetto (5th), and Ben Schmeckpeper (7th) in the standings. In the 30-39 age group, Beth Coughlin and Suzy Walsh were 1st and 4th respectively, while Ely and Brendan Prindiville were 2nd and 7th on the men's side. Karen Ringheiser was 10th in the 40-49 age group and Eileen Troy was 6th in the 50-59 age group.

The next USATF New England Grand Prix race will take place on Sunday, September 20th at the Lone Gull 10k in Gloucester, MA. The 2009 series will conclude at the Baystate Marathon on Sunday, October 18th in Lowell, MA.
