Meyer is 5th at the Mayor's Cup Cross Country
10/25/2009

Over the course of the twenty-year history of the Mayor's Cup Cross Country Races, the event has developed from a small local meet to one of the premier cross country races in the east. The twentieth running of the Mayor's Cup was another highly competitive event with the top men breaking 24 minutes and the top women finishing under 17 minutes, in spite of wet and muddy conditions that resulted in slighly slower times. The team competition is intense as well, with many east coast-based clubs traveling to Boston as preparation for the USATF Club National Cross Country Championship in December.

The B.A.A.'s Lucas Meyer had a remakable performance, following closely behind the lead pack for most of the race. Meyer held his position, taking 5th overall and placing first among club team athletes. In his first cross country race for the B.A.A., recent Carnagie Mellon graduate Brian Harvey was 13th overall. Matt Carter, Louis Raffetto, and Matt Ely all placed in the top 50 to complete the scoring. In the Master's competition, Wayne Levy was first overall.

The women's race proved to be a close one with the women receiving 58 points - a score identical to that of cross-town rival New Balance Boston. The fifth runner's place was the tie-breaker with the edge going to New Balance. Jeannette Seckinger led the team, just two weeks after her victory at the Hartford Marathon placing just outside the top ten in 11th place. Emily Kroshus was close behind in 12th place. Also placing in the top 20 were Kristin Murphy in 14th place and Lara Johnson in 21st. Stephanie Hood rounded out the scoring with her 28th place.

In the Franklin Park 5k, Josh Gordon cracked the top ten with his seventh place finish. Barbara Bell and Carol Chaoui both placed in their age division with Bell taking second and fifth respectively.

The teams will return to Franklin Park on Sunday, November 8, 2009 for the USATF New England Cross Country Championships.
