Women Take First and Men Are Second in the 114th Boston Marathon.
4/19/2010

Donning the new blue and gold uniforms emblazoned with the B.A.A. unicorn, B.A.A. running club members sought to live up to the legend of the mythical beast who is often pursued, but never caught. The women's team was successful, defending their 2009 team title to capture their second consecutive victory at Boston. Led by Michelle Sarney, Jody Dushay, and Laura Smith, the women again emerged victorious.

All three women have recently returned to competitive running after time off from the sport. On the road to Boston, Dushay won the Palm Beaches Marathon in December, Sarney ran 1:20 at the New Bedford Half Marathon to score for the team and propel them to the team title, and Smith placed 7th in the USATF New England Grand Prix 10 mile Championship in February.

The Men's Open Team of Lucas Meyer, Paul Ryan and Jared Markowitz ran the second-fastest time in club history to take runner-up honors. Their 7:15:59 was just shy of the 7:14:25 that the 1991 team ran to also place second. For both Meyer and Ryan, Boston was their debut marathon. Meyer and Ryan both finished in impressive times with Meyer posting a 2:21:29 while Ryan ran 2:27:14. Meyer has already qualified for the 2012 US Olympic Team Trials Men's Marathon by virtue of his 1:03:51 at the Houston Half Marathon, in January. In team competition earlier this year, Meyer and Markowitz were part of the winning team at the 2010 New Bedford Half Marathon.

The Men's Master's Team also captured runner-up honors. Wayne Levy set the pace with his 2:37:08. Michael McGrane, and John Barrett completed the scoring for the B.A.A.

It was a near perfect day from Hopkinton to Boston for the B.A.A. athletes participating in the 114th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 19, 2010. Competitors were greeted by sunny skies and temperatures in the 40s and 50s with a slight crosswind. The excellent conditions led to a number of personal bests by running club members.
