| Double Victory for the B.A.A. at the Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5 Mile |
 |
| 7/15/2010 |
Andreas Heilmann was all alone as he cruised to victory at the Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5 Miler in South Boston on Thursday, July 15, 2010. As Heilmann rounded the penultimate turn onto the UMass Boston Campus, there was no one else in sight. His 26:40 was 25 seconds ahead of the B.A.A.'s Luke Dodge, who had also gapped his nearest competitor by 25 seconds. The Sugar Bowl introduced a new course this year, starting and finishing at Boston College High School, allowing Heilmann to add a course record to his title. Heilmann and Dodge led a strong contingent of B.A.A. men with Mike Brown Dowling, Ben Schersten, Chris George, and Matthew Hebert fourth, seventh, eighth and eleventh place respectively. For the fourth consecutive year, the B.A.A. boasted the women's champion. After a quick 5:50 first mile, Lindsay Willard settled into race pace and second place. She took the lead just before the halfway point and never looked back. Her 31:16 gave her a 15-second margin of victory. Club newcomer Liz Hankinson, a recent Wake Forest grad, ran a strong race, finishing 3rd overall for the women. She was followed by a close contingent of B.A.A. women with Beth Coughlin, Amanda Walsh, Pam Kustas and Ann Morrissey finishing 4th, 6th, 10th and 11th respectively. The B.A.A. competitors also continued their tradition of taking many of the top age group awards. Bill Riley's 34:52 earned him a 6-minute victory in the 70-74 age group. Andy MacDonald also took home some hardware, finishing just under 30 minutes in 29:59 to claim top honors the 50-54 division. Also winning their age divisions were Dodge (20-24), Brown Dowling(25-29), and Schersten (30-34). George (25-29) and Hebert (30-34) each claimed the runner-up spot in their division. David Rein and Dennis Herman went 2-3 in the 60-64 category, while Jim Thompson (50-54) and Tony Darocha(45-49) each took second place in their age groups. The women were also well-represented on the awards podium: Hankinson (20-24), Coughlin (30-34), and Kustas (40-44) were all division winners while Walsh (25-29) was third. The Sugar Bowl 5 Mile has been a mainstay in the B.A.A. Summer Series. In it's 10th year, the B.A.A. Summer Series gives club members an opportunity to race in a number of high-quality local races over the summer months. Next up on the racing calendar is the Stowe 8 Miler in Stowe, VT on Sunday, July 18th, followed by the Marathon Sports 5 Miler on Thursday, July 22nd. On Saturday, August 14th, club members will be in action at the Bridge of Flowers 10k in Shelburne Falls, MA. Both Stowe and the Bridge of Flowers are a part of the USATF New England Grand Prix Championship. RESULTS 1. Andreas Heilmann 26:40 2. Luke Dodge 27:05 5. Mike Brown Dowling 27:49 7.
